Burger King jumps on the creepy clown bandwagon!*
A funny wig and some makeup are supposed to create laughter, not terror. Psychologists who study human behavior believe coulrophobia, the fear of clowns, is caused by social factors. People acquire this unreasonable phobia from the mass media. All the horror stories about clowns appear to have harmed mass psychology. And of course, some people just never liked clowns in the first place.*
A few years back, scary clowns were a big deal. It seems to have had something to do with guerrilla marketing for the film It.* This inspired McDonald’s leading fast-food competitor. Burger King’s advertising campaign effectively used creepy clowns to poke fun at McDonald’s mascot.* We’ll never look at Ronald McDonald the same again.**
